The beginning
Josefien Kleverlaan was born on the 27th of January 1985 in Alkmaar, the Netherlands, and at the age of 4 she was standing on a box in the middle of the living room singing for her pet toys. The theatre was for her a magical place, and she enjoyed going to youth theatre performances. The magic of theatre attracted her from a very young age.
When she saw a performance of Miss Saigon in Scheveningen she knew what her goal was: becoming a musical theatre performer. She performed in schoolmusicals, sang a song at every concert night at her school and followed dance and singing classes. She even went to some auditions, just to get used to it.
Education
After the Gymnasium she auditioned for a dance academy, got in, but decided to study Theatre Studies instead, while following more singing, acting and dance classes. She also joined the tv-show 'Sterrenjacht' on Dutch television. With Kosmo Theaterproducties in Alkmaar she played War, Romeo and Juliet and Saucy Jacks and the Space Vixens, and she participated in summer schools at the Guildford School of Acting and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in the UK.
After graduating she got into the Music Theatre Bachelor at Codarts Academy of the Arts in Rotterdam. There she practiced her singing technique and learned a lot about acting, improvisation and interpretation. She played in the productions 'Blaak', 'Little Shop of Horrors', 'Dreamgirls', 'Eten' and 'Süße Mädchen', performed in two showcases, and created her soloshows 'Evita' and 'Sisi'. In her fourth year she decided to follow her dream and did a Master Musical at the Guildford School of Acting, for which she got
financial support from the VandenEnde Foundation. At GSA she played in 'Fiddler on the roof', 'A little night music', 'Into the woods', 'Me and my girl', she played the part of Genevieve in 'The Baker's Wife' and was street chorus in 'Bernstein Mass' at the Royal Festival Hall in Londen.
Career
After graduating Josefien stayed in London for a while, following dance classes at Pineapple Dance Studio's and playing in the musical 'HMS Pinafore' on the Battersea Barge.
After some auditions she got a job as solo-singer on the cruiseships of AIDA cruises, and moved to Hamburg for rehearsals. She performed in lots of shows, like rock-, pop-, schlager- and musical shows on big and small ships and she created three different soloshows. One of those was based on the life of Eva Peron, with songs from the musical Evita.
Between two contracts she created a musical version of the play 'Eten' with two friends from Codarts and played the show in small theatres in the Netherlands.
After her work on the ships Josefien worked as a freelance singer / actor, and sometimes as singing teacher, but also for companies as Apple and at the beautiful Rijksmuseum. She still attends singing classes with Christian Schleicher in Hamburg , and did an acting course at Studio Act2Act.
Then a big dream came true and she got a job in the musical Sister Act in Oberhausen, in the ensemble as nun, golden girl and other small parts.
After some months singing with Vocal Group Voïsz Josefien went back to Germany to be back in the convent, this time as a swing in the Sister Act Tour, and from August 2017 on she's playing ensemble and has her first cover role as Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins in Stuttgart and Hamburg.
